History of Viru Folk

The roots of Viru Folk reach back to the Sámi people of Finland. Between Peep 2000 and 2007, festival founder Peep Veedla organised the cycling tours “How Are You, Finland?”. In August 2007, one of these tours led the group to the Sámi region of Northern Finland, where the band Angelit, formed by Sámi sisters, performed a concert for the cyclists. The concert had such a profound impact on Peep that, despite previously working in pop music as the head of a record label, he realised that his true calling lay in folk music. Together with his son Villu Veedla, they had just founded a company and were planning something meaningful and exciting to create — and soon reached the idea of organising a folk festival. Interestingly, neither of them had ever attended a folk festival before.

On 1 December 2007, a group of about ten people gathered in Käsmu to discuss the idea and begin planning. Some of those who joined that day are still part of the team, though most of the team has since renewed and grown younger. Since August 2008, the festival has taken place every year, always two weeks after the Viljandi Folk Music Festival.

In 2013, the team decided that each festival should highlight the culture of a specific country or people. This gave rise to the themed years dedicated to Sweden, the Sámi, Denmark, the Nordic islands, Finland, and many others. These regional theme years are precisely what set Viru Folk apart from all other festivals in Estonia.
